Visual Identity and Product Design

Create a visual identity for an ORIGINAL hypothetical and edible liquid:

1.  You will begin by writing about your product.  Post your answers to your blog.

What is the name?
What does it taste like?
For whom is it designed?
What sort of mood or feeling does it convey?

Standard considerations when creating a product identity:

Identify your audience and develop an understanding of their needs. Use these insights to shape your design decisions.
Analyze and evaluate the product in its competitive context.
Identify the target consumer, their needs, and their relationship to the product in a manner that will allow you to find them: This means that your audience has already established hubs, communication networks, etc. (If members of your target audience are dog owners, for example, you can find them through vets, pet stores, dog parks, dog mazines, groomers, kennels, web zines, dog shows, and dog trainers)
Define the core idea behind your product (A target + a problem = the core idea or a product niche)
Identify the key problems your project addresses. Understanding your consumers' problem is how you reach them emotionally. Your ability to articulate the pain, needs, problems, and desires of your prospects is the centerpiece to how much they will trust you, your ability to come up with irresistible offers and messages, and whether or not you can even get their attention in the first place.
Translate the core product idea into a powerful and memorable product identity by developing key product identity elements such as product name, logo, and packaging.

2. Next you will search for an appropriate typeface.

LOGOtype:
PAGE 1:  On an 8.5 x 11 .ai document, write the name in several different typefaces to see which feels right. (minimum 10 variations)

PAGE 2:  Once a typeface has been chosen, on a new 8.5 x 11 .ai document adjust tracking and proportions to see how subtle shifts might change the mood. (minimum 5 variations.)

PAGE 3:  On a new 8.5 x 11 .ai document, try color - single color, more than one color for the letters on the name (minimum 5 variations.)

PAGE 4:  On a new 8.5 x 11 .ai document, try the word in color on different background colors, create several color harmonies (minimum 5 variations.)

3. Next you will create a logo.

LOGOgram:
PAGE 5: On a new 8.5 x 11 .ai document, create 3 completely different logos that embody the spirit of your product.  (minimum 3 variations)

PAGE 6:  On a new 8.5 x 11 .ai document, use experiments on page five to create a label in three shape variations. (for instance: the bottle, the bottle neck, and the bottle cap.)

PAGE 7-9: On 3 separate 8.5 x 11 .ai documents create 3 different bottle shapes using the "revolve" function in Illustrator.  Your bottle shape should reinforce your overall concept.

PAGE 10:  On a new 8.5 x 11 .ai document, put the label(s) on a bottle - wrap a 3-D bottle with a label, create a page featuring the label on a bottle created in illustrator

PAGE 11:  Design an 11 x 17 poster featuring the object and the name of the product. You can choose to show the 3D bottle or a silhouette of the bottle. It is up to you, but the decision must be intentional. Your poster should not include photos or slogans. Whatever message you wanted to convey through a slogan should be conveyed through the overall design of your poster. Consider the message that the colors and illustration style convey about the product.
